The City of Tampa will hold a press conference at 9:30 a.m. to “provide an update on flooding conditions in Davis Islands, and other surrounding areas, and the dozens of water rescues being conducted.”
We’ll embed the stream here when it wraps, but Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said that the National Guard has been activated to help with rescue efforts.
Hurricane Helene made landfall just south of Perry, Florida, nearly 200 miles south of the Bay area, but storm surge has left many communities in Hillsborough and Pinellas County flooded.
Tampa officials are encouraging folks to stay home if they can and look at flood maps for the area.
Pinellas County said that many roads are still completely underwater. “Don't risk your life or your vehicle to get out this morning. Major bridges and barrier island access remain closed,” the county added.
More than 1 million people across the state are without power this morning.
The City of Tampa is asking residents to reduce water use and wastewater drainage as local crews work to check water department systems and make repairs.
Tampa residents can also self-report damages to help the city assess damage operations.
