The little-known Tuskegee Dunes Foundation became a prominent player in the uproar about a Department of Environmental Protection proposal to add golf courses, resort-style lodges and pickleball courts at state parks.

The foundation was reportedly advancing plans for three golf courses at Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Martin County, perhaps the most-controversial part of the package, dubbed the “Great Outdoors Initiative.” After the uproar, the state at least temporarily shelved the initiative.

Meanwhile, Tuskegee Dunes has been moving proposals with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Tuskegee Dunes has a series of pending trademark applications --- first filed June 5, 2023 --- on spectator chairs, cups, insulated containers for beverages, beverage glassware, printed golf scorecards, golf scorecard holders, golf towels, tote, duffle and shopping bags, t-shirts, golf shirts, sweatshirts, vests, golf balls, golf tees, golf divot repair tools and golf bags.

Another is for golf course design.
Also sought to be under the Tuskegee Dunes brand is entertainment services, such as holding golf tournaments, providing golf instructions and a website offering information and instructions.

Another application seeks to trademark charitable services, namely providing educational scholarships to military veteran families focused on minorities.

The foundation, which is incorporated in Delaware, shared an Oklahoma address with the non-profit veterans group Folds of Honor, which previously teamed with legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus on American Dunes golf course in Grand Haven, Mich.

DeSantis acknowledged Wednesday during an appearance in Winter Haven that he discussed golf-course plans with Folds of Honor founder and CEO Dan Rooney on Aug. 10.

“They have operations throughout the country where they've given millions and millions of dollars to spouses and families of fallen service members, injured service members, and then they've recently expanded that into first responders,” DeSantis said.

“And so, those are the types of things that we worked awful hard on in the state of Florida,” DeSantis added. “And if we can leverage some of these resources to do it, you know that could have big benefits for the state. Now, it’s not going to happen at the Camp Murphy site in Jonathan Dickinson (State Park). But maybe they will be able to find a site, maybe an existing course they can rehab, show it some love.”
