Photo review: Frodus Ressurected (with Guiltmaker & Hurrah)!

Frodus Conglomerate International (1993-1999) resurrected on June 18, 2009 at Redlight Redlight, Orlando, FL, continuing what has been an outstanding reunion year for '90s hardcore (most recently the unbroken/split lip reunion at burning fight). Supporting the resurrection was Tampa's Guiltmaker and Orlando's Hurrah.

Conspiracy theories aside, Frodus invented and continues to own the spazzcore genre that kept DC hardcore from stagnating in in the nineties. I fondly remember seeing Frodus at zillions of shows in DC (including a memorable incendiary evening at the Happy Hardcore House), in FL and GA, including several notable Tampa and Gainesville shows including at least one at 403 Chaos.

Ten years later the band has done a couple of reunion shows including an appearance this year at SXSW. Remaining shows include shows tonight at Common Grounds in Gainesville and on Saturday night at the Black Cat in DC with Van Pelt (both shows also feature Guiltmaker).

The crowd was a mix of very enthusiastic original fans as well as new fans who never thought they would have an opportunity to see Frodus live... including four kids who drove from St. Louis to catch the show. That's what I call dedication. Many of the new fans were turned onto Frodus by Thrice who cover Frodus' anthem, "The Earth Isn't Humming."

Frodus sets by definition have an element of surprise. Thursday's performance was no exception delivering an impromptu mid-set bean bag toss game and creatively used tree branches. As relevant today (maybe more so in the current economic crisis) as in 1996, the Frodus Conglomerate International lives on to incite another day.

Frodus is Shelby Cinca (Guitar, Vocals), Jason Hamacher (Drums) and playing for the ressurection is Jake Brown (Bass, Vocals).

Guiltmaker's new record Dilemmas (Kiss of Death Records) is finally out arriving just in time for last night's show. It was worth waiting for. Guiltmaker delivered their trademark show last night and garnered enthusiatic response from the Orlando audience. Click for a full review on Guiltmaker here. Hurrah takes the best of bicoastal '90s hardcore, mixes with a dash of 21st century, and voila, a new brand of melodic hardcore. I look forward to seeing them again soon!
