Free Concert Alert: The Hold Steady

Just got a release announcing that The Hold Steady will return to the Bay area, this time playing a special, last minute show at Jannus Landing on Thursday, June 4. This one's on Jim Beam's tab, which means that the show is FREE. You hear that folks -- a FREE Hold Steady show! Not a huge fan myself, but they've got alot of loyal fans here because of that "Killer Parties" song with the infamous lyrics, "If she says we partied then I'm pretty sure we partied / I really don't remember / I remember we departed from our bodies / We woke up in Ybor City." Tickets are very limited (it's a free show after all), and are available to ages 21 and up only; sign up for the drawing to get in here.

Leilani, Thanks for the heads-up about the free Hold Steady show, but why include the "Not a huge fan myself" disclaimer? Afraid your friends will think less of you for liking the band?

(Music journalists tend to write about music they don't necessarily like, to show our objectivity, but it's hard for me to pretend like I like a band, so I usually put in some sort of disclaimer when I don't so I don't feel dishonest. I mean, I could've pointed out how the Hold Steady is just the modern equivalent of Brucie and the E Street Band, but what would be the point in that?)

Anyone else sign up to "win" these tickets? Apparently you automatically "win" every time, but will the tix be held at will call, or how exactly does this "contest" work? (I understand Jim Beam is just trolling for consumer info, but am I to expect tickets held in my name somehow?) Re: Leilani Polk's comments: It's a free show- appreciate the heads up, but if you aren't a fan of their recordings give the live show a shot- their last time in the area (for the Tampa Am) was fantastic. And there was free Pabst. Hence the show was "pabstolutely fantastic." You do the math.
Josh B -- no problem, my pleasure to enlighten. And what does it being an announcement have to do with anything? Btreotch -- no, I don't like Jim Beam either. (Sorry marketing team.) Cobra -- I've heard that the Hold Steady is fabulous, over and over again. But dontcha have to like the music at least a little bit to be able to appreciate it in a live setting?
Leilani - It appears that everyone who fills out the form "wins" - but there's no explanation of how to get tickets. Can you shed any light on that process? ALSO: I have a similar situation with My Morning Jacket - I have several friends who are are over the moon about them, but every time I listen to them it's just... underwhelming. Explaining why a band is "eh... ok, I guess..." is always harder for me to explain than explaining why a band unremittingly sucks.
I think the deal with this thing is a first come-first serve. You just need to show up early and make sure you are one of those. Probably with whatever confirmation you got (if you even got one).
I agree with Leilani Polk on that "not a big fan" thing. I liked the Hold Steady the first time around, when they were called Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Come to think of it, I also like them better the second time around, when they were called Big Head Todd and the Monsters.
I love how people knock a band whenever they can detect an influence in their music. It's like a music snob gotcha game. There's nothing new under the son, people. Bands, like people, have influences, and the music they like will inform the music they create. It's not always something to be derided. Maybe we could use a Boss throw-back considering the Boss has re-invented himself as some sort of folk cowboy hero.
