The last time Dr. Dog played Tampa was Halloween '07 to a light crowd with only a few fans singing along. Though it was only a year-and-a-half ago, it was must have felt like a small lifetime for the Philly fivesome. Since then, the band has been on several "Best of" lists, put out a well-received album, '08's Fate, and eevn appeared on NPR a few times, too.
Just before midnight last night, Dr. Dog returned to the stage at Ybor City's Crowbar and played to a packed house, tearing into The Ark first, following it up with an excellent rendition of The Way the Lazy Do, then filling the room with warm melodies and three- and four-part harmonies as they performed almost all the tracks from Fate as well as a few cuts from 2005s Easy Beat, like the grating Fools Life.
A guy in a dog costume replete with lab coat and stethoscope joined Dr. Dog for some dancing and clapping during Oh No, the the band closing the set shortly after with a haunting rendition of The Beach and The Rabbit, The Bat and The Reindeer. The crowd roused the band for a two-song encore, Say Something and My Old Ways. The show ended somewhere around 1 a.m.
Here's the complete setlist:
The Ark, The Way the Lazy Do, 100 Years, The Old Days, Hang On, The Breeze, Worst Trip, Aint it Strange, My Friend, Army of Ancients, Fools Life, From, Oh No, The Beach, The Rabbit, The Bat, and The Reindeer
Encore: Say Something, My Old Ways
The band has been on the road for a good while, but they say theyre staying sane listening to a good bit of M.Ward and the Black Keys. Theyre back on the road this Spring and after playing a date at Coachella Festival, they plan on taking some time off and hitting the studio this summer.
Local boys Win Win Winter opened up the show with a short, seven-song set that included a bold, but capable cover of The Beatles Something. These guys are a good, young band, but the frontman is an oversinger and I just dont believe him (yet).
Touring with Dr. Dog is Boston quartet Drug Rug. They were good enough, but ultimately forgettable save for their mix of indie rock and blues riffs and, of course, the girl guitarist/singer, who played a mean little Gibson.

Was a great show, really enjoyed it. The review of Win Win Winter seems uninformed. Not 5 months Creative Loafing awarded WWW Best Of The Bay. The singer is powerful on a level unseen in the local music scene. They will forever be the Kings OF Tampa. It's rather poor reporting to say a band has yet to convince you when your publication has awarded them the best band in tampa title. It's actually sad.
James.. that's some sweet logic you've got going.. "These guys are a good, young band" and note the subtle difference between "I" and "we"

I think this is a great post. One thing that I find the most helpful is number five. Sometimes when I write, I just let the flow of the words and information come out so much that I loose the purpose. Its only after editing when I realize what Ive done. Theres defiantly a lot of great tips here Im going to try to be more aware of.

It really is delight to be aware of you, wishing the nicest stuff continually to suit your needs, not simply currently, but each of the yr as a result of since you might be definitely a delight to understand. Posed By Jordan Spizike
Faith just isn't anything you possibly can need or command; it happens to be a end result of dedication to perception. Do you assume so? Posed By Jordan Spizike
