Guilty pleasures

Posted by Wade Tatangelo on Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Michael Hussey over at Pushing Rope has baited me into revealing some deep, dark secrets. "This is what happens when you make fun of a feminist's undying love of Michael Jackson and Pussycat Dolls," he writes. "The game is bloggers tag each other and name their five guiltiest musical pleasures on their iPod." It's Friday, I have a hangover. I'll play along.

Top 5: Guilty Pleasures

1. "Dancing Queen," ABBA

2. "Since U Been Gone," Kelly Clarkson

3. "Milkshake," Kelis

4. "How Do You Like Me Now?" Toby Keith

5. "Sugar, Sugar," Archies

WHAT ARE YOUR GUILTY PLEASURES?

I don't really feel guilty about any of the music I listen to because I have such good taste. ;-) But for the sake of argument, I will include: "Shout," Tears for Fears (more Phil's guilty pleasure than mine, but it's in our shared iPod and it's the first thing that came to mind, so ...). "Eat the Rich" and anything from Aerosith's Get a Grip catalog.

What the fucks wrong with SHOUT? You don't like tears for fears? Now you tell me? I'm gonna have to go with that Desiree song...not even sure what it's called, but it melts the ice from my mangina.

Nothings wrong with it. I'm just over it. I guess it's not even a pleasure for me at this point. It's "You Gotta Be" by Des'ree. :-)

Who doesn't like that Kelly Clarkson song? The chorus is killer.

i would say that Clarkson's little ditty is not too guilty. Too many critics and music fans with street cred love the song. Heck, even Ted Leo covered it. I would add Backstreet Boys "I want it that way." But, I think many critics (including the staff at RS) admit it is a good song, nonetheless.

As Wade well knows, I've got so many guilty-pleasure songs, a list of five is but a drop in the bucket. So I'll just name a few off the top of my head, ones that will open me up to merciless ridicule: "You've Got it All Over Him" --The Jets "Words Get in the Way" --Gloria Estefan "Cherish" --Kool and the Gang "I Will Remember You" --Amy Grant "This Kiss" --Faith Hill "Please Remember Me" --Tim McGraw Almost anything by Elton John post-1970s that charted: ("Sacrifice," "Circle of Life," "You Could Make History Young," "The One") The early-'80s hits of Chicago ("Hard Habit to Break," "Along Comes a Woman," "Hard for Me to Say I'm Sorry" Nearly all of Air Supply's hits. Ditto for Shania Twain

Very good post. Made me realize I was totally wrong about this issue. I figure that one learns something new everyday. Mrs Right learned her lesson! Nice, informative website by the way.
