tbt* bait and switch?

I wrote a Music Week Brief titled "Ultimate Showcase at Skipper's" to advance tbt*'s The Ultimate Local Music Showcase, which took place Saturday, May 10 at Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa. The only info posted at the Skipper's Smokehouse's website 10 days ago, when I was on deadline, linked to tbt*, where I found this (see pic). Skipper's would later note:

MAY 10 SATURDAY

Ultimate Music Showcase

Presented by Wide Eye Caffeinated Spirits

Sponsored by tbt* Tampa Bay Times

6 Local Bands from tbt* local music guide.

Blind Buddy Moody 6-6:45 p.m.

November Foxtrot Whiskey 7-7:45 p.m.

Rebekah Pulley & The Reluctant Prophets 8-8:45 p.m.

Win Win Winter 9-9:45 p.m.

Aych 10-10:45 p.m.

Bird Street Players 11-11:45 p.m.

SHOW 5PM-12AM $5 ADV $10 DOOR Buy Tickets

tbt* never changed the page on its website, which promises readers appearances by Red Room Cinema, Zillionaire, Psuedo Heroes and Tres Bien. Here's the link. In a comment posted May 9 on my piece advancing the May 10 show, New Granada notes:

NOTE/CORRECTION: Tres Bien, Zillionaire, Red Room Cinema and Pseudo Heroes are NOT scheduled to perform at Skipper's tomorrow night.

Personal scheduling conflicts kept all of these bands from the roster, so basically none of them were on the bill from the beginning.

Sorry for the confusion, and on that note, you should still go check out/support the show (especially our friends Win Win Winter).

If "basically none of [the bands] were on the bill from the beginning" why didn't tbt* make it more clear online that not all 10 bands would be performing? Probably an oversight. These things happen, I know, but it's likely I wasn't the only person who felt misled.

The item Wade mentions was an advertisement that wasn't under the purvey of the editorial department. Does Wade oversee ads at CL? Plus, it didn't say "all of these" bands. I agree it was misleading and tbt* should have clarified, but it's a poor excuse for a poorly reported self-aggrandizing, petty, sexist attack -- that was inaccurate, too. He had his head in the sand if that was his only source.

When CL sponsors a show our marketing team notifies me. The tbt* page was my only source and I went with it. I don't have time to check every band's website to confirm they're on a lineup being advertised by one of the area's biggest publications ... especially that week, which found me heading to New Orleans to cover Jazz Fest. "Sexist"? Are you serious?

So let me get this straight: you fuck up and post the wrong band names (again!!!) and its tbt's fault?!?! Nice job, Wade. I seem to remember you roasting REAX for doing something similar a few months back about Radiohead's announced tour date. But, now it's someone else's fault. And, your "bait and switch" allegation still doesn't make sense since Skipper's had the listing up on their site prior to the show. You don't have anyone to correct your mistake and add it to the CL's site? And the sexist comment anon refers to is your little bitch slap at tbt's Julie Garisto and how she "drools over every Tampa Bay band like a sophomore in love with the lead singer." Sounds pretty fucking sexist to me. Btw, what the fuck does New Orleans Jazz Fest have to do with the TAMPA BAY MUSIC SCENE?!?! What makes you think your "reporting" from NO is worth your readers time? And you are using that as your excuse for not fact checking? I'll give you this Wade, you've got a set a balls on you. Not much for brains, though.

Joey: Going out of town is no excuse for not fact checking, but those were the facts listed by tbt*. And NOLA Jazz Fest does have a lot do with the Tampa Bay music scene. For instance, NOLA fave Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, a Jazz Fest regular, was one of the most popular acts ever at last year's Tropical Heatwave, according to WMNF program director Randy Wynne. This year's Heatwave, which takes place May 17, features Crescent City brass band Soul Rebels, an act like Andrews combing trad NOLA jazz with funk and hip-hop. I first saw Soul Rebels at Jazz Fest several years ago and was amazed by the distinctiveness of their sound, one that's def not being created here or just about anywhere else outside the Big Easy. Look for my story, which features an interview I did with Soul Rebels in NOLA, in the CL that hits newsstands Thursday. Sexist? Don't take my words, which made no female reference, out of context. Guys drool, too. The remark was not meant as a jab at any particular person, or gender.

sexist? um, no. But how hard is it to correct an online listing? It's not like somebody had to yell "stop the presses!" or anything.

Joe Positive: You're right, it's not that hard to correct online listings ... But I don't check the 50 local venues I have bookmarked everyday, especially not on the weekend. I wasn't sent an email, so until an editor alerted me today to New Granada's informative comment, posted Friday, the day before the show, I didn't know of the change ... Y'know, my writing assignments go beyond music.

Wade, I was referring to tbt's failure to correct their own error, not your failure to discover tbt's error and correct it on your site. Guess I could've been clearer.
