Eric Clapton playing Tampa on May 3

Does the guitar god still got it? Judging by recent YouTube clips, especially from the tour Clapton did with Derek Trucks at his side, I think so. Let's just hope he skips "Wonderful Tonight," that annoying cover of "I Shot the Sheriff" and, well, pretty much everything from the 1980s — except "Pretending." Always like that one the best when it comes to E.C.'s pop stuff. Pedal steel guitar whiz Robert Randolph, one of the most exciting live acts around, opens.

Maybe I've just heard it too many times. Looking for a poppy Clapton ballad from the same time period that hasn't been played to death? Check out/download E.C. doing "Sign Language" with his buddy Bob Dylan, who penned the song.
"Wonderful Tonight" was one of the most misunderstood songs in Clapton's canon, more about impatience than joy, ("Patty, you look wonderful tonight, may we go now?") That said, it's one of the signature 70s songs from what I think is one of EC's best CDs, "Slow Hand." It'll no doubt be a great show touching on all phases of his career and I have to put the ticket buying strategy in place to go. Thanks to us old geezers having baseball practices and school functions to attend, I'll have a teenage son of a close friend stand in line for tickets for a nominal (ugh) "convenience fee." I don't know what's worse, that or my daughter arguing with me that Clapton wasn't a "rock" singer. Arrrgh! Just for that Alex, go to your room...and bring "Disreali Gears" and "From the Cradle" with you. See you at the show...
'Wasn't a rock singer'? That's rough. Better also grab "Wheels of Fire" and have a mandatory family listening session. Enjoy the show and make sure to arrive in time for Randolph, he's amazing.
