Caribou tonight, er, tomorrow

Posted by Wade Tatangelo on Tue, Oct 16, 2007 at 9:03 PM

Senior Editor Eric Snider and I were planning to see Caribou (here's my interview with band leader Dan Snaith) perform tonight at Crowbar in Ybor City.

Problem is, Caribou isn't scheduled to start performing until midnight, which means the band probably won't play until 12:30 a.m., which means the show won't wrap until around 2 a.m., which is way too late for even most music writers to be out on a Tuesday night unless he absolutely has to, as in Talking Heads or Led Zeppelin have reunited for a double-bill tour with shows only starting at 1 a.m.

Apparently, we're not the only ones who have tried to talk Jack Spatafora, of Aestheticized Presents, to start his shows (or at least put his headliners on), at a more reasonable hour. Check out this comment posted by Jennifer Hollowell, which starts: "Fuck yeah, flapjack! I’ve been bitching at Jack S. for years about this exact issue and it falls on deaf ears."

Look, Aestheticized Presents brings some of the best shows around. Without Spatafora, the Tampa Bay music scene would be seriously diminished. But I can't help but think attendance numbers would rise if shows like the recent David Dondero gig I attended started around 10 or 11 as opposed to 12:30 a.m.

Skipper's Smokehouse and Jannus Landing typically get their headliners on no later than 10 and close shop around midnight. These are venues that often book the same kind of shows Aestheticized Presents brings to Crowbar and nearby New World Brewery. So, y'know, it can be done.

I'd really like to get feedback one this one, especially from the people who enjoy waiting for the headliner to go on at 12:30 a.m.

I have had this on my calendar since the last week of August, and am not going because of the time. I would sooner drive my drunk ass home from a 9pm show at The Social.

My thing is weekdays. I can\\\'t be expected to work eight hours and then kill 6 more hours in Ybor before the band plays.

it is absolutely crazy the start times on some of these bands. Granted, i love what our local promoters are doing to bring quality music to the area, but it's like pissing in the wind if no one shows. i take that back, i am sure the shows are, well, attended; but wouldn't it do everyone (band, promoter, bar) to have the shows' headliners on by 10pm? 11 on the weekends? i know of dozens of people who just cant go to shows not starting until after midnight on a weekday. we have jobs and stuff. which gives us the money to go out and support the music. damn, even when i was in my bar fly glory 10 years ago, i would still get pissed if shows didnt start until late. it sucks to run of money for beer durning the opening act. which brings me to the last part of my rant... why do i need to listen to 3 or more opening bands???? this could be a good reason why the headliners are getting on so late. case in point... the earl greyhound show that is coming up... do i need to wade through 3 other bands in order to see what i paid my ticket for. pick one band, maybe a second one with a super short slot, at the most. i didnt want to shell out 15 bucks to see filler bands that populate the ybor bar scene every other night of the week... i want to see the band that doesnt play here. or maybe have the headliner play and then a local band picks up the late nite slot so the kids who can stay out until the BOD still have some of their local flavor keeping it real... that was way too much soapbox.

Maybe we're just old farts who can't hang anymore. A band from Orlando came through recently to the Skatepark of Tampa. Apparently, their way of showing appreciation and celebrating was to constantly scream and spray beer around the room. When told by a fellow musician/organizer to cut it out, they pouted. When told to "grow up" by said organizers girlfriend, they said, "We don't need to grow up, you need to rock-and-roll-up! This is how we do things in Orlando." (or some such nonsense.) But maybe that's the problem. Do we all need to Rock and Roll Up a little bit?

I agree the show seemed late, as usual. I guess that is the price you pay...it's rock and roll. Don't get me wrong, I bitched, then I drank coffee, then I headed down to ybor at 11:30. And, I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear the next bit... THE SHOW ROCKED. It was awesome. Plain and simple. Caribou delivered on every aspect, from vocals, to distortion and feedback jams that had the place captivated. And the show was pretty crowded, didn't seem like the start time kept many folks away. Stayed for the whole show, and made it back to St. Pete by 2:15am.

Yes, Caribou totally rocked, and it was totally worth me being grumpy the next day, but I can't say that I object to the idea of weeknight (Mon.-Wed.) night shows starting a little earlier. But I also think it really depends on the band. You have a folk singer pimped by WMNF? He should probably go on somewhat early. An indie rock band pimped by Pitchfork? Later. In all honesty, I'm the sort of person who will go to a show regardless of the time it starts if I like/love the band that's playing, but even I am suseptible to late start times, expecially if the show's in Tampa ('cause I live in St. Pete).

Agreed times ten! And, the venues in St. Pete and Tampa sometimes forget those of us that travel from Sarasota or other places (I have friends in Tarpon Springs, Holiday, Bradenton, Ft. Myers etc.) who add on at least an hour or more of travel to the show's ending time when we have to be back at our day jobs early the next (or well by that time the same) day. Sometimes I wonder why they don't just have the headliners perform alone on week nights, AND starting the show at a reasonable time. Even though that could leave lesser known bands without as many opening gigs, it's just a fact. This past summer I was supposed to see a show in Pittsburgh and got held up by flight delays, made it to the theatre a little before 11:00 p.m and saw people milling about outside. Great, set break I thought. No, the promoter told me, it's a working man's town, on week nights, they end shows early on purpose! So maybe a compromise of sorts would be reasonable!

I just wasted 15 minutes writing some amazing prose on this topic that was very motivational, inspirational and some how still non- offensive but this comment box decided to delete it. So I'll be more to the point because I have to go work on my vintage Jaguar. 1. Rock and Roll is supposed to be dangerous. It's name came from ghetto slang for sexual intercourse. 2. It's not Rock and Roll's fault that you moved to a sleepy retirement community and as far away from any amassed culture as possible and therefore it is a 2 hr drive to see a show here for cheap that you may actually be able to get a ticket to, you should be thankful that the band actually had the guts to risk touring in FL to within 2 hours of you. 3. Different bands have different audiences. Just because you are settled down and have to work at a desk at 6 am doesn't mean that the band should have to take any of this in consideration, and let us pray that they never do. It's Rock and Roll. If you can't handle it watch American Idol and go to bed early, I assure you that you won't be missed especially if you normally: A- don't dance B-don't buy the bands CD and T-shirt C-complain about it being too loud 4. Iggy Pop is an old fart. He also has a body like a lion and is liable to do anything for what he believes in. Imagine giving him all the complaints listed above as valid reasons for why you couldn't go see the Stooges. He would be disgusted with you. 5. What Joran posted above regarding the punk SPOT show is so insane that I shouldn't even be responding to it. Someone was upset about "sprayed beer and screaming" at a punk show at the SPOT. At a punk / indie show that should be the LEAST of your worries. Here's a solution: don't go to anything called a punk or indie show at a punk or indie venue, you might actually accidentally attend a REAL one. You wouldn't want your ol' ticker racing too much, might have a stroke.
