What To Watch For: Music

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, The Lumineers and more of the best upcoming concerts.

Don’t miss…

Tampa Bay’s fall music calendar is always jammed with noteworthy shows, and the 2013 season is no exception. Three venues in particular are ramping up their live music offerings.
State Theatre The St. Pete staple brings in a hip-hop classic, Southern rap pioneers Geto Boys (Sept. 21). Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (Oct. 10) treats local fans to a bona fide headlining gig of their grinding, seething psych-garage propulsion after warming the stage for Stone Temple Pilots on their last two stops, in 2008 and 2010 respectively. And beloved faves Lucero return Nov. 2 with another night of booze-soaked honky tonk-flavored rock n’ roll.
USF Sundome After a summer of virtually no activity, the Sundome launches a giant 2013-14 season with a few pop-catchy alternative rock bills featuring acts you’ve heard in heavy rotation on 97X. The first, Imagine Dragons (Sept. 24), is enjoying a stage upgrade from the Ritz show the band played last year. The second, Fall Out Boy, touches on pop-punk, with warm-up rock drama from Panic! At The Disco and light rock hop by Twenty One Pilots (Sept. 29). The remaining fall lineup spans classic funk n’ soul (Isley Brothers, Oct. 5), dreamy-ambient orchestral post-rock (Sigur Rós, Oct. 7), mainstream-friendly Americana and indie rock (The Lumineers with Dr. Dog, Oct. 19) and intelligent, socially conscious hip-hop (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with Talib Kweli and Big K.R.I.T., Nov. 23).
Straz Center for the Performing Arts Tampa’s big arts center hits hard with two significant urban-minded concerts in its spacious Carol Morsani Hall. Jay-Z-championed hip-hop artist/producer J. Cole hits town on a wave of platinum success with new sophomore full-length Born Sinner and a chart-topping single, “Power Trip,” and is joined by another big name in the hip-hop game, Wale (Sept. 13). Fast-rising critical darling The Weeknd (aka Canadian recording artist Abel Tesfaye) brings fresh alternative style to R&B sounds (Sept. 25).
