See a beloved musical powered by some of the best operatic vocals in the state — heck, the world. West Side Story, the Romeo and Juliet romance of the Great White Way, will be performed by the St. Petersburg Opera at the Palladium this weekend. Set in Hell’s Kitchen during the mid-’50s, the musical has a majestic score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim and depicts the urban rivalry between the Polish-American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. The story, as almost everyone knows, follows Tony (Gilad Paz, pictured), one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria (Anais Mejias), the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. Nancy Preis, spokesperson for St. Petersburg Opera, says that spoken dialogue is still in the production — adaptations are strictly forbidden by the license. So expect a faithful retelling that’s relevant during any time period. —Julie Garisto
