Viva Mexico! Casa Tina Mexican Independence Day Celebration

When: Sept. 14-15, 5:30-11 p.m. 2012
Price: Free admission.
Contrary to misguided popular belief, Mexican Independence Day is not Cinco de Mayo. It's "El Grito" (Spanish for the Shout) and it's commemorated on Sept. 16. Head to Pioneer Park for Downtown Dunedin's second Friday Wine/Art Walk and celebrate the Mexican holiday with Casa Tina's and the Downtown Dunedin Merchants Association. Their Friday fiesta offers food and drink specials, arts and crafts, and Ballet Folklorico performs. On Saturday, a fun and festive evening includes food and drink specials, cirque performances and at 10 p.m., El Grito "Casa Tina-style! The shout for independence occurs every year at 10 p.m. on Sept. 15. Attendees are invited to come dressed as your favorite Latin character and receive your toast margarita free. Reservations for the grito seating suggested at 9 pm. For the occasion, Casa Tina also will debut two new mojigangas (gigantic puppets), similar to the creations that usually tower over the masses on the Day of the Dead.
