The first few minutes might make you think you’re in for a bit of a snooze, but keep watching: This documentary chronicles the important and engaging story of the lesbian separatist movement born of the feminist advancements of the ’70s. The film focuses on the years between 1975 and the early ’90s, a time when lesbians began to break away from the overarching feminist movement to seek out safe havens in matriarchal communities in which they could explore their own sexuality, political growth, and burgeoning culture. Archival footage and photos, plus interviews with authors, musicians, artists and activists of the time — many now in their 70s and 80s — bring the era to life. Plus, there’s a Florida connection: Canadian filmmaker Myriam Fougere lived at Pagoda in St. Augustine during its heyday, and there are several mentions of the lesbian beach paradise.
