Watch: One half (with Darren Conner) of the Best Royal Couple, Paul Smith of the Queens Head restaurant explains how he and Darren met (it involved an Italian ski slope, a rugby team and a now-ex-girlfriend), and Paul attempts to recreate his cover-boy leap. He spoke with CL's David Warner during the Best of the Bay awards reception Sept. 19 at Creative Loafing.
Paul Smith and Darren Conner, the royal couple who rule over The Queens Head, responded to CL's emailed questions via Paul.
How long have you been a couple? How'd you meet?
We've been together for 17 years and we met skiing in Italy.
How do you share the responsibilities of running the restaurant? Is there a division of labors, or you both do a bit of everything?
We share most day-to-day responsibilities of running the Queens Head, but Darren tends to be the money man and I do the advertising, marketing and organizing events.
What's been the best thing about working together at Queens Head? What's the worst?
The best thing about working together is that we get to spend a lot of time together. The worst being, that we get to spend a lot of time together.
Has being a couple helped you to make the restaurant work?
I do think that being a couple has helped to make the restaurant work, as we both have similar ideas on what we want to achieve, we both have fun together and hope that that relaxes other people when they are in the Queens Head and provides a family/community atmosphere that we have aimed for from the start of the business. We are both working towards a common goal, and the benefits of owning a successful business together is ultimately going to be good for us as a couple.
Any future joint projects in mind?
Yes, we do have future projects in mind, but Mum's the word at the moment… all I can say is 2013 looks like it's going to be a busy year!
