OK, so a 14-year-old kid in Churchill, Pennsylvania saw that somebody left the keys in their Jeep Grand Cherokee. And in a moment of cray-cray (read: dumb-ass kid-speak for madness), the kid stole the Jeep. And the kid’s actions initiated a high-speed chase that ended with the kid in a medically induced coma, a major thoroughfare closed for hours, and untold thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.
A kid STOLE A CAR. The police CHASED THE KID, and at some point CALLED THE CHASE OFF, but the kid STILL CRASHED THE CAR, HURT HIMSELF ENOUGH TO BE PUT IN A MEDICALLY INDUCED COMA and FUCKED UP TRAFFIC FOR HOURS AFTER HE WAS DONE ENDANGERING THE PUBLIC.
It happens. Kids do dumb shit. They break stuff, and steal stuff, and set stuff on fire.
The parents of those kids who got into this sort of trouble used to take the heat for them — you know, give the press a suitably contrite quote, wonder aloud where they went wrong, etc.
Apparently, times have changed, because — again, caps mine — THIS FUCKING IDIOT KID’S MOTHER WOULD RATHER BLAME THE VEHICLE’S OWNERS AND THE POLICE THAN HER CHILD.
HER CHILD BEING THE KID WHO STOLE THE CAR.
This stupid, wrong-headed woman is quoted as blaming not only the Jeep’s owners for leaving the keys in their car — thus tempting her moronic spawn — but also local law enforcement for initiating the chase.
Are you kidding me?
Accepting responsibility is tough; so tough that our culture is built around avoiding it. Were “Mom” to entertain the idea that her 14-year-old son was the kind of fuckup that could be responsible for this mess, “Mom” might have to look at the possibility that “Mom” really kind of sucks at being a “Mom.”
So, you know, let’s make this clear: DEAR ANY AND ALL MOTHERS OF KIDS WHO STEAL CARS — IF YOUR KIDS STEAL CARS, YOU HAVE BLOWN IT.
Hear me, parents. You have blown it by not paying attention, and other people are paying the price.
Start paying attention. Stop blowing it. Be a parent to your kids.
It’s beyond infuriating, watching your self-absorption ruin the next generation of Americans.
