The perfect musical to set the tone of Halloween month, Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street will be staged by the St. Petersburg Opera Company at the Palladium this month. The booming musical is about a barber who is set free after being wrongfully imprisoned for 15 years, almost like a cousin to Les Miserables. A very disturbed cousin that you keep your pets and kids away from. During Todd’s jail time, his wife commits suicide after the judge who put Todd away rapes her. Todd takes vengeance on not just the judge but most persons around by slitting their throats and baking them into pies with the help of the fiendishly sweet Mrs. Lovett. Makes me glad I stayed away from my Grandma’s mincemeat pie at Thanksgiving. The St. Petersburg Opera Company sets up the carnivorous story with the help of its 20-plus person orchestra and large ensemble cast. Peter Kendall Clark plays the murderous barber and Buffy Baggott plays Lovett. Mark Sforzini conducts the frightening score. If you don’t leave the play looking over your shoulder, you may need to check your pulse. —Stephanie Powers
