Florida is the setting for the first-ever Sunshine Blues Festival, a traveling fest in miniature spread over two stages and with a mere three stops that end right here in the scenic waterside setting of Vinoy Park. Heading up the festivities is Tedeschi Trucks Band. Helmed by soulful songstress Susan Tedeschi and musician husband, subtle slide-wailing guitar virtuoso Derek Trucks, the 11-piece brews up a textured, melodic, jazz and gospel-hued union of roots rock, blues and R&B. Other fest highlights: grizzly New Orleans ivories-banging singer-songwriter Dr. John, whose funky fresh 2012 album,
Locked Down, was produced with a heavy hand by Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys); electric blues axeman Joe Louis Walker, fresh off issuing his own new album,
Hellfire; and The Wood Brothers, the folk, blues and back porch grooves project of guitarist/singer-songwriter Oliver Wood and upright bass-wielding younger sibling Chris (Medeski Martin & Wood), currently joined by Jano Rix (drums, shuitar, melodic). Other performers: Walter Trout, Sonny Landreth, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Matt Schofield, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Sean Chambers, Bobby Lee Rodgers.
