Identity: It certainly is a tricky subject. The self is, in whole or part (depends who you ask), a social construct — in some ways predefined. Before we open our mouths, we are already identified by others as a member of the racial, sexual and spiritual categories to which we belong. Missy Roll and Allen Leper Hampton explore the parameters of selfhood, and the ways in which the sense of self is shaped by sociocultural factors. The show takes as its basis the idea that every person is a conglomerate of sometimes conflicting identities. It then aims to question the idea of identity as a pieced-together composite. Roll’s and Hampton’s approach uses historical notions of racial and religious identity to question the ways in which we self-define today. —Kent Roberts
