Steven Wright

When: Fri., Nov. 2, 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $65, $73
One of my favorite one-liners by Oscar- and Grammy-winning comedian Steven Wright makes mention of a slinky and an escalator. That’s all you need to know. There really isn’t much more to his jokes than that, which shouldn’t dissuade you from seeing the frizzy-haired icon at Capitol Theatre. The inspiration of the late great Mitch Hedberg and current sensation Louis CK has been going at it for more than three decades, and he hasn’t lost his touch. Administered with a signature deadpan — seemingly Benzo-driven — delivery, Wright’s jokes offer an image or idea followed by another, and then a one-second pause to get them, finished off with the hilarious zing of how perfectly they go together; thoughts you’d never connect but wish you had. These paraprosdokians (10-cent word cribbed from Wikipedia) can be far out or cleverly sensible (“Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time”). Offstage, Wright is more upbeat than you’d think. The Massachusettsian says he’s addicted to his racing bike, and his love life has been a series of “long-term women.” Now, that’s a paraprosdokian. —Julie Garisto
