TIGLFF Movie Review: The Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait of James Dean

What if James Dean had been bisexual?

A “speculative” bio-pic, which means director Matthew Mishory is wading into the much-rumored but never-confirmed bisexuality of James Dean without the benefit of established facts. As such, the movie works as a strikingly photographed (in glorious black and white) and well-acted (Dean Preston does a convincing job as the pre-Hollywood idol) period piece that may be completely full of shit. Still, it’s a flight of fancy worth taking. Sat. Oct. 6, 1 p.m., Tampa Theatre.
