With so many dumbed-down rom-coms, you might be jonesing for more insightful, artful and humorous glimpses into the ins and out of human relations. If so, opt for live theater and see the season opener of Tampa Repertory Theatre. In the two-character romantic comedy Phoenix by Scott Organ, Sue (Georgia Mallory Guy) and Bruce (Jon Gennari) find themselves in an awkward circumstance, contending with obstacles that don’t consist of an angry best friend or bespectacled kid. Their challenges exist within themselves, weighted by their emotional baggage. Suffice it to say, there’s more to ponder in this regional premiere than the latest Hollywood pablum starring some actress with the first name Jennifer. C. David Frankel directs. His Tampa Rep won CL’s Best New Theater Company in this year’s Best of the Bay. —Julie Garisto
