Long before Angelina’s Maleficent, Druid priestess Norma emerged as a tortured anti-heroine. Her jealousy leads to her undoing, fueling the bel canto opera named after her — its emotional range as dynamic and challenging as its soprano. Feel the swirl of intense emotion as Norma finds herself in a love triangle that unfolds against the backdrop of a war between the Gauls and the Romans. Not all doom and gloom, the opera has its happier moments. One duet is an affirmation of Norma and Adalgisa’s friendship. Adalgisa tells Norma that she will renounce her love for Pollione in deference to Norma and they revel in the bonds of sisterhood. St. Petersburg Opera debuts Bellini’s Norma at the Palladium Theatre, starring Elizabeth de Trejo as Norma (pictured), Kirk Dougherty as Pollione and Jennifer Feinstein as Adalgisa. The cast sings in Italian with English supertitles. Mark Sforzini directs and conducts. —Victoria Casal-Data
