The grooving fedora-sporting cats who make up The Vodkanauts have been dishing out their sometimes slinky, sometimes muscular combo of lounge, surf, rock and swing for a decade. The lineup has changed a bit since the original 2002 edition, and currently, Jonathan Harrison hits on booming Vegas showman-style lead vocals, Mark Warren delivers searing guitar licks, tight riffs and cool strums, Ryan Arsenault adds keyboard class, John De Bellis holds down the low-end grooves on electric and upright bass, and Stan Arthur provides the jazz-airy rhythms, all but DeBellis adding backing vocals to the mix.
For the band’s 10th Anniversary Deluxe Super-Spectacular Extravaganza, the V’nauts draw on deep cuts from their repertoire when welcoming former bandmates to the stage, like singer/guitarist Steve Alex (of Four Star Riot), who contributed a bit of funkiness during his tenure, and bassist Michael Hoag, who played in the more surf-coated instrumentals of early V’nauts. The band also touches on their time with both male and female singers with a mini-set of femme-fronted tunes with guest vocals by Sara Rose (of The Sara Rose Band), and serves up abridged versions of the notable full-album projects they delivered for a few WMNF benefit shows: The Who’s Tommy and Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Ed Woltil of The Ditchflowers lends vocals and acoustic guitar to the former, and electric axeman Dan LaJoy (Helium Bomb) joins them for the latter. Should make for an especially stellar shindiggy.
