Live and Local Spotlight: Rec Center 7” Release Party

Rec Center reveals outtakes from last year’s stunning Tin Year that are just as compelling and gorgeous as the Best of the Bay-winning indie folk-roots album that spawned them on their fresh 7”.

The four songs included on the release are a bit more meditative and restrained than Tin Year’s already calming odes, the heart-squeezingly sweet masculine-feminine vocal harmonies of New Granada label-heads and bandmates Susie and Keith Ulrey sliding effortlessly over gently swaying instrumentals, hers a clear and luminous coo against his deeper intones. Other than the twangy waltzing lovelorn opener, “Without a Scratch,” the 7” is mostly free of drums and bass, mostly crafted from spare threads of bowed cello, gently plucked and strummed acoustic guitar, and drops of pretty electric piano and keyboard melodies.

The five-piece stages a 7” release party this Saturday night, with only 200 vinyl copies available for purchase. Make sure to get there early to snag your copy.

Details: Rec Center 7” Release Party with DieAlps! and The Pals, Sat., Sept. 7, 9 p.m., New World Brewery, Ybor City, $7.
