Bluer skies abound, so enjoy them filled with color on the beach at KiteOberFest — and help kids with cancer live to enjoy brighter days ahead. The two-and-a-half-day event in Treasure Island sports professional and amateur fliers, converging to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Center. It also comemmorates the first anniversary of Kiting Tampa Bay, a local hobbyist group, which hosts events throughout the year. The Friday night festival kickoff party begins with a “night fly” at the Thunderbird Tiki Bar next to the pool, beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday night there will be a kite auction with items really up for bid, above the Thunderbird, at 7 p.m. See demonstrations of aerial acrobatics set to music, sport and power kiting and kite boarding. Family activities, food, raffles and vendors round it all out. The high-flying handiwork of renowned kitefliers can be enjoyed — Robert Brasington, Ben Dantonio, Steve DeRooy, Bazzer Poulter, Kurtis Jones, Quad Squad Gary and Maggie Engval — who’ll be there to fly their kites and greet you when their hands aren’t occupied. —Julie Garisto
