Keep St. Pete Lit helps educate the city about its connections with famous writers. Writers such as beat scribe Jack Kerouac, who lived out his last days as a regular at the Flamingo Bar on on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North, in addition to frequenting bars and taverns up and down Central Avenue and having had two residences in the Burg. All of the aforemententioned locales are stops along the 10-mile route of this weekend’s Kerouac in Paradise: A Literary Bike Tour of St. Petersburg. The Friends of the Jack Kerouac House present the early afternoon group bicycle ride, and Keep St. Lit will host an after party at the Flamingo, featuring live music, food trucks, spins by DJ Katarina Lauver from WMNF’s IndieFM show, the Bluebird Book Bus and David Durney, the “drinking poet,” who will compose poems on his typewriter. Free parking will be provided at the Flamingo and nearby, and there will be bike valets to watch bikes after the ride.
