Keep Saint Petersburg Local Celebrates National Hug Day

When: Sat., Jan. 19, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. 2013
Price: Free.
Are you an excellent hugger? Do you not get enough opportunities to demonstrate your prowess in public? Good news: National Hug Day has been embraced by Keep Saint Petersburg Local (KSPL). Mayor Bill Foster, Tampa Bay Rays mascot Raymond, and Bay News 9’s Chuck Henson will make appearances at the Saturday Morning Market – hugs from the mayor, anyone? Purists of the holiday may complain that this event falls early of the official date, Jan. 21, but hug-giving is an internationally recognized random act of kindness. Juan Mann, founder of the Free Hugs Campaign, gave his first embrace in Australia with the help of a “Free Hugs” cardboard sign. KSPL’s effort is emblematic of our interconnectivity. The nonprofit’s site states that spending in local independent businesses triples the effect on Tampa Bay’s economy.
