Inspired by her in-depth research of a 1930s lynching, Owens tells the story of Jolie Hoyt, daughter of a Pentecostal preacher in Marianna, Fla. Jolie falls in love with an anthropology student who uncovers a horrible secret and becomes a victim of violence himself. More than a decade later, he and Jolie come together in a quest for justice and truth.
