When it originally opened in New York, Godspell ran for more than 2,000 performances and went on to an endless round of appearances in regional and community theater productions. Then in 2011, composer Steven Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin), re-orchestrated the show so as to make it more palatable to the children of its first spectators. It’s this updated Godspell, still based on the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, that the re-formed and resurrected City Players is bringing to the Palladium. You can expect to hear the musical’s big hit “Day by Day,” along with “Prepare Ye,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All For The Best,” and a bunch of other catchy songs, and you can further expect a joyous retelling of the story of Jesus, with deep seriousness only coming with Act Two’s crucifixion. Crass materialists, beware: this musical favors things of the spirit. —Mark E. Leib
