When I think of Florida art festivals, I think of bad beach art that hangs in hotel lobbies, a long hair ponytailed guy playing the pan flute, drift wood art and painted cartoons of golf scenarios. Luckily for the residents of Tampa, once a year the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts invades downtown filled with local and national artists doing way more than bad beach scenes. Artists who work in all types of mediums will be posted at the Curtis Hixon Park Sat., March 2, and Sun., March 3 to show off, sell and be judged on their unique works. A prime example of the not-your-normal Florida art show artist is Winter Haven’s Trent Manning whose Tool video-esque sculptures won last year’s $15,000 Best in Show prize. Acme Jazz Garage is the headlining band for the March 3 music lineup, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
