Part of the recipe for many successful comedians is likability, and it’s often achieved through self-deprecation and honesty. The audience doesn’t just laugh but shares in emotional alchemy and catharsis. Gary Owen is this brand of comedian. Owen grew up in a trailer park, and he and his siblings had three different fathers. He joined the military, where he was stationed on a naval ship that did nothing but circle the Pacific for six months. Eventually Owen picked up a stand-up comedy microphone and quickly scored two awards: “Funniest Serviceman in America” and (can’t make this up) “Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego.” Based in part on the latter award, Owen went on to become BET’s first white on-air personality. He has numerous film and TV credits, including College, Daddy Day Care (with Eddie Murphy), and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. —Kent Roberts
