As a child growing up in the '80s, I wanted to be just like many of the characters I saw on television and movies. A Goonie. A breakdancer. A ghostbuster. A karate kid. A steel-worker by day, adult dancer by night all the while dreaming of being a professional dancer like Jennifer Beals’ character in the movie Flashdance. Well, maybe just the professional dancer part. What little girl (or boy) didn’t want to be Beals in black leotard and leg warmers as she made the judges squirm during her final audition dance to Irene Cara’s “What a Feeling.” And who doesn’t, as an adult, try to re-create the scene sometimes when home alone after a bottle of wine? Flashdance — the Musical brings the movie to life at Straz Center’s Carol Morsani Hall, beginning Tues., Feb. 19. Jersey Boys and Addams Family choreographer Sergio Trujillo rework many of the famous dance scenes for the stage. “What a Feeling,” “Maniac” and many other hits from the soundtrack will be the backdrop. The show is not meant for children under 14. The movie wasn’t either, but thankfully my mom didn’t know that at the time. —Stephanie Powers
