Manuel Rebecchi’s uncle, Massimiliano Nones, received the the prestigious Gold Clown Award awarded to him by Prince Rainier of Monaco. So to say that the owner of Cirque Italia comes from a fine circus pedigree would be a clown car of an understatement. Bringing his new production, Cirque Italia ACT XII to MOSI this month, the vaunted circus veteran calls it Soleil meets Age of Aquarius. The comparisons to that more famous cirque are inevitable, and Rebecchi seems prepared to meet them head on. Cirque Italia distinguishes itself with European quality performances at affordable prices, a modern show priced for our current economic fall from the highwire. It’s a breathtaking show that will bring unique aerial acts, hand-balancing acts, contortionists — all things you might expect. But it’s ACT XII’s movable water stage and dancing fountains that really differentiates Rebecchi’s spectacle from other circus performances. For the remainder of Cirque Italia's run 10 percent of ticket sales will be donated to Metropolitan Ministries. —Brian Lawrence
