The next touring jubilee has been touted as a return to form and groundbreaking visual feast, with an emphasis on two circus traditions — acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. See tests of human endurance juxtaposed with delicate beauty and slapstick humor. The story of the performance follows loner-misfit Innocent's journey as he encounters a king, trickster, pickpocket, and the "Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog." Cirque's slogan for this show: "An adrenaline rush of acrobatics in a zany kingdom."
Cirque du Soleil's costume designer, Marie-Chantale Vaillancourt, draws from graphic novels, the painter Klimt, Mad Max movies, time-travel movies to India and Eastern Europe. One more side note: The company's wardrobe manager is from St. Pete. Check out CL in the coming weeks for more about him and a comprehensive look at the local connections between Cirque du Soleil and other vintage acrobatic groups and touring companies.
