Broad Comedy: A Tribute to Women Humorists

When: Sun., May 4, 7 p.m. 2014
Female humorists liberate their gender from the not-too-distant expectation that they should be unfailingly positive and demure wives and baby-makers. Women like Chelsea Handler, Fran Lebowitz and Tina Fey let us know that it’s just fine to be grumpy and hungover, to kvetch about our sex lives (or lack thereof) and to carb out in a stoned-frat-boy frenzy. I and a posse of accomplished local female scribes will salute literature’s finest fuck-offery during Broad Comedy: A Tribute to Women Humorists at the Studio@620 in St. Pete. Other readers include Sarah Fryett, Mitzi Gordon, Tenea D. Johnson, Heather Jones, Lisa Lanser Rose, Jenny Miller, Meredith Myers, Emily Nipps, Tiffany Razzano, Nadine Smith, Gina Vivinetto and Cathy Wos. I myself will be reading from Fran Lebowitz’s Metropolitan Life, who taught me that “food is an important part of a balanced diet.” 7 p.m., May 4, $5 donation at the door; buy tickets for a chance to win books, CDs, art created by and donated by local women. 620 First Ave. S., St. Petersburg. studio620.org. —Julie Garisto
