Winner of Sundance and Cannes awards, the film has created quite a buzz for its visceral filmmaking, a battle-against-the odds post-Katrina story and freakishly adorable star at the center of it all. Amazing young actress Quvenzhane Wallis —as fierce as her lioness-like afro — plays Hushpuppy, the 6-year-old daughter of an alcoholic father who takes up residence amid the makeshift shanties of Southeastern Louisiana. The low-budget film was shot with a lot of handheld camera work in the swamps of Terrebonne Parish, and local inhabitants were used in featured roles. The 2012 drama/fantasy is Benh Zeitlin’s first feature. He and his crew immersed themselves in the bayou culture and spent arduous months meticulously casting the film. It was made with help from the Sundance Labs and the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, and recipient of an NHK award.
