In the late Larry Shue’s farce The Foreigner, British pals Froggy and Charlie travel to a remote fishing lodge in rural Georgia for a little business as well as R&R. Because Charlie is painfully shy around strangers and unable to talk, Froggy convinces their hosts that his friend doesn’t speak English. Charlie, appearing innocent and childlike, soon ingratiates himself to the country folk, and at one point is coaxed into telling a story in his “native” language. Thinking they can speak freely, those in Charlie’s presence often reveal more than they should, challenging his ability to keep a straight face without giving away the ruse. But the misunderstanding comes in handy when he overhears a scheme by a shady minister and a local property appraiser to take over the lodge. The play, which made its off-Broadway bow in 1984, won Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production. Matt Chiorini directs a cast that includes local luminaries, pictured from left, Greyson Lewis, Elizabeth Dimon, Matt Lunsford, Chris Crawford, Natalie Symons, Dan Matisa and Gavin Hawk.
