A summer-like swelter didn't prevent hundreds of relatives, loved ones and friends from cheering on 35 scholarship recipients in Odessa on April 9.

The biggest story in the almost completed 2010 college football regular season is the controversy surrounding the young man considered the best player in the country, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton. Over the past two weeks, allegations that Newton's father was calling around and specifically requesting that Mississippi State University pay over $100,000 for his talented son to play for that university has tainted Newton's Heisman Trophy prospects.

Heisman voters have until December 6 to cast their ballots on choosing who they believe is the best player in the nation. What do they do without specific evidence?…

For years former CL (or Weekly Planet, as it was then called) editor John Sugg railed in the pages of our publication against the Tampa Tribune for its advocacy of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers getting a new, tax payer paid stadium, which happened in 1996.

Neil deMause, in the pages of FAIR magazine, back in 1999 wrote:

Until this season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had played to, well, if not always sold out crowds in Raymond James Stadium since the facility opened in 1998, crowds that were sufficiently large enough to encourage management to gobble up the remainder of the tickets so that the league mandated 72 hour blackout rule was never put into effect.

But after a dreadful 2009 season that included a completely new identity led by head coach Raheem Morris, expectations were as low as they had been prior to coach Tony Dungy turned the franchise around in the mid 1990's.…

My condolences to all of you Tampa Bay Buccaneer fans, bummed that for the first time since the 20th century (and for the first time ever at Raymond James Stadium in the regular season), your beloved men in orange won't be available to watch this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. However, unlike the pre-season when this happened on two occasions, you won't be deprived of football, as WTSP will instead offer the Buffalo-Miami telecast (which is almost as unappealing as Cleveland-Tampa. As Tom Jones with the St. Pete Times reports this morning, every other game available for CBS to broadcast in Tampa would have been a better choice).

For the first time ever, the media-research firm Nielsen has developed a system for ranking the popularity of NFL teams based on each team's local and national TV rankings, how often they're mentioned on the Internet, and how many visitors they attract to their official websites. The Nielsen Sports Media Index lists the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the 2nd least popular team in the NFL, trailed only by the St. Louis Rams.…
