      <![CDATA[Plays under copyright are often now licensed for production with sex-restrictive clauses concerning casting.<br>
<br>
You can argue about the rightness or wrongness of that, but it does reflect playwrights' concerns that it can be a very serious change to the work to have a female actor playing a male role, and vice versa.<br>
<br>
You don't have to worry about that with public domain works like those of Shakespeare, of course. (No royalties on those, either!
