It's heeerrre. One of the biggest events ever to hit the Bay area finally gets going for four glorious days. But sor-ree — The Daily Show's four-day stint at the Straz is sold out already. As for that other big affair going on down at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, well, you knew that would be hard to get into. Most of us will be limited to watching the RNC on television, and we do mean limited. Years ago, the broadcast networks jettisoned gavel-to-gavel coverage. (Remember when Ted Koppel dramatically left the GOP Convention in San Diego in 1996 because there was “no news?” That diva.) The networks will give you an hour live each night of the convention between 10-11 p.m. But if you want to hear a platform discussion, or hear Ron Paul speak, you’ll be able to catch that on CNN, right? Uh, not really. If you’ll recall four years ago, the blathering bloviators at all three major cable news channels focused more on their own coverage than what was going on at the dais. (There’s always C-Span.) If you live and work near downtown Tampa, figure that the commute will be a bit hellish. We wish you the best, Harbour Island. But you’ve been given plenty of warning, so we don’t advocate bailing out. Instead, revel in what will surely be an interesting week of protests, disruptions, and being shut out of your favorite restaurants. Tampa Bay Times Forum, 8-11 p.m. nightly.
