Just a note...I was testing the Hormone-free beef a little while ago. Hereford, is just poo!
Always look for the corn-fed. Grass fed too lean! Some ranches, the ones in Colorado specifically, have a RED - Angus. Great never-never program. The corn fed is done at the last 90 days of the steer's term. Grass fed in most cases.
Also, has anyone been in the center of the state? Just about five miles north of the the northernmost point of Lake Okeecobee is a Lykes Cattle ranch that stretches to the southern tip of Sarsota. Everything in-between is cattle pastures. The winter stock of cattle was mostly gone but while I was driving the nearly one and a half hours across this area (on hwy. 70), I still saw hundreds of steers. Mostly all Black Angus yet there were some Red Angus intermingled.
A good portion of cattle raised in America get their start right here in Florida. So, if you are looking for a good steak, look in your own backyard.
