If he's trying to turn his business into a bar then that's fine. When I was a kid I went to dinner with my parents all the time, nice restaurants and everything. The difference is I didn't act like an ass when I was little or my dad would whoop my ass.
Clearwater Bagel is a great bagel shop. Every year my wife and I make the stop after running the Turkey Trot. Good coffee and great, fresh Everything bagels. The wife likes the pumpernickel or salt bagels. We usually bring a small container of homemade chive cream cheese for our spread.
I hope the beers aren't too "approachable", i.e. Miller Lite, Bud Light, etc. I mean having PBR tall boys is fine and beers like Sierra Nevada produce some really good mainstream beer, but don't go down that other road.

Unless O'Briens opened a new spot on Dale Mabry, the location you listed on N Dale Mabry is now Dale 1891 Gastropub. I would like to add a 1000% upgrade IMHO.
Good luck and you are a better person than me. Although I don't drink like I used to, I do like to imbibe at social gatherings, when I am out to eat, or just the occasional winding down drink after work.
Nice article, too bad there are too many douchebags out there, like the golf club salesman, who live by "the means justify the ends."
