  • Kickoff time: ready for some football

It's September, when males get a gleam in their eyes, while gentler eyes roll back in their heads, not believing it's already here. Football season is off and running, and blocking and tackling, and constantly injuring. James Wright (1927-1980), whose lines frame this essay, linked the game's glory and sorrow to our defeated dreams of heroism. (Most men, uninterested in poetry, or even retrospection, would just blink on hearing this, and pop a Yuengling -- excuse me a minute, I'll be right back...)
  • Who owns my garbage?

Some years ago I read about a slightly loony "garbologist" who liked to go through people's trash, including that of one person in particular -- Mr. Robert Zimmerman of Woodstock, New York, aka Bob Dylan, rebel poet of a generation, blah blah blah. One day when said garbologist was busy in the trash cans in front of Dylan's Woodstock home, the songwriter supposedly spotted him, came tearing out of the house with the first blunt object that came to hand -- a bicycle pump -- and whacked the researcher upside the head with it.

  • Corkscrew: Get your drunk on

This week, life threw a massive curve ball at Creative Loafing Media. Taken over by the NYC-based hedge fund to whom we owed a ton of money, each employee processed the news in a different way: sadness, optimism, relief. Me? I got shit-faced. On great wine. I figured if my family's legacy is going down, I should consume voluminous amounts of quality juice. Fast. However, the questioned remained ... which ones? So many choices, so little time to race and get to the promised land.

  • Is Afghanistan a necessary war?

There is little to suggest that boots on the ground in Afghanistan is necessary for preventing future attacks. However, the assumption of its necessity might may lead to neglecting other viable and more peaceful options.

  • What did we learn from Obama's "Full Ginsburg"?

Was the President truly effective in going wall to wall, when perhaps just appearing one such show could make big news? Who knows? But did he say anything truly remarkable? I would posit that his comments on Afghanistan were of interest, especially in the wake of Bob Woodward's scoop Sunday night that the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, says he needs more troops (as many as 45,000, according to the New York Times) or else the war effort might fail.
