Straight Dope
My son just finished a three-month karate class. Last night he asked me if karate really would help someone defeat a larger, stronger opponent. I told him I honestly never heard of anyone using any martial art to win a fight outside of a movie. You would think here in New York, with so many muggings (at least at one time) and other violent crimes, there would be stories of people using martial arts to defend themselves. But all we got is Bernie Goetz, and he had a gun. So in all of recorded history, has a skinny black belt ever beaten up a beefy weightlifter? My son's future athletic choices may depend on it. --Patrick Castillo, New York City
Well, I'd keep him off the steroids, if that's what you're asking. Also, common experience suggests that where big vs. small is concerned, you don't necessarily want to bet the rent on Goliath. Granted, David wasn't using karate, and there's no question the introduction of firearms into the situation tends to skew the odds. Nonetheless you do occasionally hear of martial arts adepts taking down attackers with their bare hands -- including attackers with guns. For example:

Political Whore
The best civic ideas in the United States converge on Tampa Bay this week, but few people realize how rich a trove of public-private partnership programs will be highlighted over at the Marriott Waterside.
The National Civic League's 60th annual All-America City Award conference is the destination for the 30 communities (including Tampa itself) that are finalists for the honor. Tampa last won the award in 1990, when Sandy Freedman was mayor. She is now chairwoman of the National Civic League.

It's midnight at a hole-in-the-wall club in the heart of Little Havana, Miami. The place is pumpin', the dance floor jammed with a multicultural mass of bodies writhing and grooving and ducking and swaying and shaking asses to the pulsing beats. The music is a breathing, heaving, horn-saturated slice of Miami fusion, the native flavors of Cuba -- salsa, charanga, rumba and the like -- mixed with '70s-style funk, hip-hop turntablism, free jazz, dub reggae, Afro-beat and electronica.

Visual Art
First there was Beth Reynolds' documentation of Tampa life in heterogeneous form -- from the flamenco dancer to the crab fisherman. Then came Suzanne Camp Crosby's more surreal take on the city's character -- think headless mannequins in period costume arranged on the veranda of Plant Hall. Next, Rebecca Sexton Larson's pinhole photographs, Steven S. Gregory's digitally altered landscapes and Marion Belanger's haunting interior spaces, devoid of people.

Is this the America we are handing over to our children? One thats main concern is violence and domination of the world? This government was put in place for the people: do the people want 60% of our taxes going to support defense? Why can't 60% of our taxes go towards supporting education, renewable energy, as well as redoing the social net so that every human being in our country has their needs taken care of?
