unfortunately this review initially kept me away from the movie.
via netflix i recently saw it and was surprised how much i liked it. sure it was no godfather, but it was funny and quirky and worth the time spent watching it.
Hey AJ, thanks for reading! I agree wholeheartedly with what you said, though I would go even further and say Jaws is great *because* Spielberg couldn't get the shots he wanted. It forced him to improvise and be more creative than he would have been otherwise. (For examples: The yellow barrels were thought up on location as a way to work around not having a shark. Brilliant!)
And as far as Blu-rays go, Jaws is now the standard.
I really had to laugh about your quip concerning Jaws’ and “his own aquatic Golden Corral” because that’s a really good way of putting it. I was terrified of Jaws as a child and I didn’t think I ever wanted to see it again. Now that I’m older, I appreciate the movie and depth it had for the time period it was made in. Because of budget constraints many of the shots Spielberg wanted film didn’t happen, but I can honestly say that the movie is great the way it is. I don’t own a copy of Jaws but I’m planning on buying it soon. Until then, the plan was to rent it but that turned out to be incredibly hard. A Dish co-worker offered Blockbuster @ Home as a solution and to my surprise they had Jaws and its lesser known (and unworthy of the original) sequels. Jaws was in my mailbox this morning and I plan on spending my Sunday afternoon watching it and remembering how scary the movie once was.
I totally get where you’re coming from. I was willing to give the movie a pass however because of the brilliance of Meryl Streep and Tommy lee Jones. They made the film watchable for me.
You still can.
Fuck me. I just watched the trailer linked in my review. It's actually compelling and full of intrigue. Maybe they should have just run the trailer on end for two plus hours...
I saw this film at the Sarajevo Film Festival in July and had to see it again here in Tampa when I returned. Benh Zeitlin happened to be there at the time and spoke briefly after the screening.
An incredible accomplishment for such a young filmmaker, the combination of the young heroine's powerful presence and the magical realism that envelops the film makes for an extraordinary experience.
I meant people from around the country will consider moving here because the Bay area looks great in the background of the movie, BlueJezebel. Not because we have male strip clubs.
Seriously, if you've been cooped up in a Brooklyn shithole for the last few years and you see these characters take a boat to a gorgeous sand bar populated by hot people in skimpy bathing suits … I mean, why would you not think to yourself, "what am I doing living in hell when paradise awaits?"
They will consider moving here and for what? Not for a male strip club. Those are seemingly extinct in Tampa. Which sucks for the females who come here even maybe just on vacation thinking they might get something like in the movie above.
I think now is a great time, especially with the movie release I can think of no better time to open a Male strip club again in Tampa. The market is flooded for the men, but it lacks any appeal to a womanly audience. If I could afford it I'd do one, but since I can't I can only promise to be there on opening night with lots of dollar bills.
Love it Sara. I'll have to go back and watch Step Up again and see how I could possibly have missed his star wattage the first time …
(You have to admit, though, that Magic Mike following 21 Jump Street catapults him to the A list from what was up until 2012 a fairly solid B-list slot.
HAHAH> "In case you start to turn gay" made me laugh out loud. Good review.
One thing though - I think you're behind a step here. Channing Tatum is not a 'star on the rise' and he already is a major box office draw. He came on the estrogen radar way back in 2006 with 'Step Up' and has been producing awesome ever since.
Great review--Can't wait to see it!
I'll watch it again … as part of an Alien marathon on AMC next year. And I'll turn it off before the last half hour.
Nailed it, Joe. Like you, I was really rooting for this to be a good film. Having said that, it's a fascinating failure and I'll probably end up watching it again.
Best movie I have seen all year is "God Bless America". I had to go all the way to Orlando to see it!! Must have been to good for Tampa Bay. It actually had actors actually acting with a plot. It had everything Amerikans want in a movie, blood, guts and guns. Boy what a morality play.
Thanks for reading robbo06. Glad you dug the movie!
I didn't think at first this movie was going to be much but, I really enjoyed the humor and action in this movie. Humor, really makes this movie not so serious and very enjoyable. Lots of action and quick banter between the super heroes. The movie theater audience was with it , from start to finish.
Some of the plot did seem a bit forced, but I enjoyed it overall! My theater laughed a lot and even clapped at the end. Brought back many memories for sure!
Great Review of Hop..Beth
