Joe always takes a second listen, because with Joe you never know what you're going to get. The 2nd listen you have an idea and can take it all in better. Didn't realize "Love's Interruption" was the first single; wasn't "Freedom at 21" released by helium balloon a while back? Anyhow, it's a great track - killer lyrics and subtle emotion in the delivery.
Let's face it, as pop stars go, Madge was the one that pushed the envelope the most in terms of creativity, reinvention, and subversion, and back then we loved her for it and reveled in the spectacle. When you look at a video like "Lucky Star" now, it seems so incredibly ahead of its time. The stark white backdrop with Madge writhing around, it's aesthetic genius. Madonna was smart enough to never take her audience for granted. She spent the majority of her career asserting her sexuality. She was the first white female pop star to full on kiss a black guy in a music video, and don't forget the highly sexually subversive imagery for the "Justify My Love" video, which was banned from MTV, Madonna never held any punches, which is the reason why she earned so much respect. Now, I don't think she needs to assert her sexuality anymore, we watched her do that for almost two decades, and that has nothing to do with her age. I suppose we wonder, doesn't she have anything else to talk about? For a woman with so many incredible experiences and such a long career, we would hope she would be able to create music with much more substance. I think she achieved that exquisitely on "Ray of Light". Madonna was usually at the forefront, wether it was bringing the underground cult of "Voguing" to mainstream America, or chartering new musical territory by collaborating with William Orbit, one could always rely on Madonna to make a bold, new artistic statement. Sadly, however, the music industry doesn't demand musical creativity as Madonna knows it, and so unfortunately, she delivers what the music industry demands..vapid, mindless, canned. So, perhaps it's not entirely all Madonna's fault, but we hoped she would be the rebel once more and go against the mainstream,delivering something completely different and unexpected. Instead, she gives in and delivers post-mid life crisis revenge and sexual frustration set to programmed beats and blips.
Sure the album is all about drugs and "white trash revenge" - if you listen to the first three tracks. Hopefully anyone commenting or reviewing this album would be more responsible than that.
Deeper in the album are some rather introspective songs about divorce, uncertainty, and the human condition period. "Falling Free" sounds more like echoes of Fairport Convention than anything Britney Spears has touched. The banjo at the beginning of "Love Spent" is an interesting and tasty segue into a pop song about divorce settlements.
"I Fucked Up"'s middle section especially touched me with its laundry list of could've-beens that cross your mind when a romance falls through.
Closing track "Best Friend" might have the most personal lyrics Madonna has ever written in decades.
I do agree, of course, with some of the review's thoughts - but it feels like the product of a half-hearted listen.
If Madonna was truly aping what the kids are doing, please point out which Katy Perry song sounds like "Falling Free" "Beautiful Killer" "I Fucked Up" or "Love Spent".
Music journalism is all opinion anyhow - and I'm the first to hate on Madonna's failures (HARD CANDY broke my heart).
I just can't help but speak up about MDNA. I think it's the perfect modern Madonna pop album.
Although I do enjoy the album, I can understand most of the criticism pointed out in this album's review. Write off this album if you will, but writing off Madonna's career and her starpower is truly what's tired.

Jeremy, I'm also a huge Madonna fan, but I agree with Kyle. This album should've been made 10 years ago. It's all about drugs and white trash revenge, and sounds more like Britney Spears than anything remotely dangerous as intended. I think she should follow her own advice and be true to herself instead of aping what the kids are doing. It's just sad.
And with this tired album Madonna surpassed Elvis as the most number one albums in the UK, was #1 on iTunes in more countries at one than has ever happened before, and thrilled her fans with the return of great music.
It's all a matter of opinion. As a long time Madonna fan I love the album. I give it five out of five stars. People have been saying Madonna is over since 1992. She may not have as big a cultural impact as in 1992, but for a later-career album there's some great stuff on here.
Hopefully one day Madonna will do an Americana album so she can get 5 stars in Creative Loafing.

Um, Aria Novos? Diamond Light was a brilliant work of art.
I have to say, I'm surprised by this review. I think you fail to recognize that one can bare his soul in lighthearted ways as well as the deeper ways you mention in "Carried Away." Not only are the new vocals outstanding and deserve to be held in a category all their own, the lyrics are touching and reach a wide audience. On top of that, the blending of the different instruments present in this album is seamless. I believe that "Bird's Eye" is a masterpiece that exceeds even the greatness of "Carried Away."
This album deserves much more than 3.5 stars! Listen to the tracks again, and I think you'll agree.
Great Album! Picks up where 'Exit The Dragon' left off! Would love to see them at 'The State' Somebody please book that show.
