Re: “Changes for the crew behind St. Pete's Social

Not surprising, considering it was one of the worst-managed bars in the area. The space was nice and the food was pretty good (after a year of continuous promises), but that's where it ended.

The bar was doomed from the start: unknowledgable yet pompous bar staff, hundreds of year-old bottled beers in the cooler but no list to choose from, a poor liquor selection, and prices that were completely out of whack with the neighborhood. [hint: it's NE St Pete, not Midtown Manhattan. $8 beers and $12 well drinks don't fly here]

I enjoyed the selection of local draft beers, but the condescending service made it uncomfortable. Their days were numbered from the start.

Re: “Trader Joe’s: Welcome neighbor or scary monster?

I see Fresh Market as more of a direct competitor to Rollin' Oats, and with it's nearly-finished (and long awaited) expansion, it appears FM has not negatively impacted Rollin Oats.

I think the 4th Street neighborhood can support everyone. Just look at the TWO Publix (Publixes? Publii?) on 38th and 4th. The Northeast Shopping Center Publix has been consistently number one for the entire chain, so volume-wise there is enough room for another high-quality entrant.

It's also true that TJ is a much better corporate neighbor than others. Although Casita Taqueria is certainly acceptable (a place that's CLOSED on Sundays? What's up with THAT?), but what is that compared to a DECENT grocery store focusing on natural, vegetarian, vegan and especially non-GMO foods.

I, for one, welcome our new Trader Joe's overlords.

Re: “Trader Joe’s: Welcome neighbor or scary monster?

I would love a Trader Joe's on 4th St. but why can't they look at the vacant buildings at the corner of 38th N and what was going to be the Hip Hop Soda Shop down toward Gandy. Perhaps it's a matter of not enough parking though the Sarasota location is a parking nightmare.

Re: “Trader Joe’s: Welcome neighbor or scary monster?

As someone with multiple allergies, it's exciting to hear I will have more than one option going forward. Rolling Oats is great, but a second option would be nice, as well. I don't think the current locations of Casita and Ringside are that great... I don't go because... eh... not much happening on 4th.

Re: “Trader Joe’s: Welcome neighbor or scary monster?

I was very sad to hear that Casita, Ringside and other local businesses are getting displaced. I plan to continue to support them wherever they end up.

From what I've read, at least, TJ is one of the better big stores in terms of pay, service, etc. But there are plenty of other locations they could go in instead, where they would not be forcing out our existing independent businesses. Big and small, I think, could happily co-exist. But driving out the small ones is wrong, and having one Big Box after another will completely change -- for the worse -- the feel and character of St. Pete. -- Ester, LocalShops1

Re: “Trader Joe’s: Welcome neighbor or scary monster?

Although I can't argue with the idea that Trader Joe's could more easily land in a vacant Sweetbay location I love Casita and don't go there nearly as much as I would like to simply because they have no parking. Move Casita and Ringside somewhere where there is more room to park and sit regardless of Trader Joe's but hurry up with Trader Joe's as I am sick of driving to Sarasota

Re: “Sticker shock

Arielle, please reconsider your stance "there is no solid scientific evidence that GMOs are bad for you. But there have been no long-term studies on their effects, either."

I would like to submit this for review:

Re: “Sticker shock

In the article you stated, "...there's no solid scientific evidence that GMOs are bad for you. But there have been no long-term studies on their effects, either. " This is not true. There is significant evidence that GMO's are extremely harmful in many ways and they are wreaking havoc on nature in the areas where they are used.
