12 steps to reform the Republican Party of Florida
In fewer than 24 hours, the much maligned Republican Party of Florida will have a new chairman. Regardless of who wins, the victor needs to show some leadership. While John Thrasher did an able job giving the party some much-needed credibility in the post-Greer days, he failed on all fronts in providing the party with the substantive reforms it needs.

State grand jury says Legislature should impose tougher penalties to crack down on public corruption. But will it?
Dan Gelber is correct in being cynical that the Florida Legislature will do much if anything about these new recommendations (but perhaps the woman who defeated him for Attorney General last month, Pam Bondi, will). If the Florida electorate as a whole showed as much concern about this as they did in the past year about the federal health care law, maybe, just maybe, the John Thrashers of the world might be compelled to do something about it.

Thrasher said party leaders feel obliged to try and recover as much as $400,000 in travel and other expenses the three racked up, including trips Crist and Greer took to New York and California that were charged to party credit cards.

Florida GOP attorney general candidates show and tell some in St. Pete
When it came to the question of gay adoption, Pam Bondi danced around the issue. She said that if the judiciary or the Legislature changes the current law (Florida is the only state that prohibits gays from adopting), she will abide by that law. But she did not say whether she supported the current legislation, as Benson and Kottcamp did.

Can Florida Dems exploit "culture of corruption" as Florida GOP implodes?
Sure, Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman is drinking this all in, like the rest of us. But her job is to get Democrats elected statewide. The party's two biggest candidates, Alex Sink and Kendrick Meek, have a tough time of it in terms of public opinion polls, but the general election is still seven months away. But what about trying to make a mark on the huge majorities of Republicans that are in both the House and Senate? Could this crises inside the state GOP be a clarion call for Democrats to make corruption a leading issue in the 2010 elections?

I don’t have any love lost for either of these clowns, and in fact I am actually enjoying the circus-like atmosphere they and others in the Florida G.O.P. created.

Rubio’s American Express card Exposed
While Rubio demonstrated poor judgment in using an RPOF provided Amex card for personal expenses, it should be noted he probably did not break the law. Further poor judgment was shown when Rubio failed to own up to the issue and release this bad news on his own terms, prior to his political adversaries showing his hand. Politics 101 dictates if you have bad news and you know your opponent knows your bad news, you release it on your own terms and you do it early. Marco’s arrogance and inexperience got in the way of following this dictum. Or did he think Jim Greer and company were nice guys who would never expose Marco’s card problems?
