Dance or baseball: A senior at Gibbs/PCCA, Braboy made his theatrical debut at Perkins Elementary, an arts magnet school (he played a tattooed man called Sketch). “My parents put me in dance. I was really into baseball at the time and had to pick between the two. I picked dance.”
Good choice: His dancing so impressed the faculty when he took part last summer in the Broadway Theatre Project at USF that they made him a mentor in the 2013 program — and next year he’ll return as a teacher. “It’s crazy they asked me to be a part of the junior faculty because I haven’t graduated yet.” But he thinks what happened is that, even though lots of the students “knew so much more about theater and musicals than I ever have,” they didn’t expect the program to be as dance-heavy as it was. “I got to kind of stand out a little bit.”
Triple threat: He can dance, he can act, he can sing — so what’s he like best? “I get asked that all the time. I’m open to whatever door opens first.” The dance doors are opening already: he was accepted to the modern dance program at Point Park University in Pittsburgh based on his work at BTP.
And he can host: He was one of three Patel students chosen to emcee the conservatory’s annual awards show.
It runs in the family: His mother, Callie Northagen, is a host for Home Shopping Network. “She sells everything from Wolfgang Puck cookware to computers to cameras to cosmetics. We get so much shampoo I can’t even tell you.”
