On Sunday, South Florida restaurant franchise Sergio's crafted the best Cuban at Miami's preliminary contest for the City2City Cuban Sandwich Festival competition, happening Sunday, March 22, in Ybor City.
And as the annual showdown's SoFlo entrant, the restaurant — which slings salami-free, Miami-style Cuban sandwiches at its seven locations — created the social media hashtag #NoSalamiInMiami, challenging Tampa area competitors' use of the meat on their Cubans.
"Who told you salami belongs on a Cuban sandwich?" asked Sergio's chief executive Carlos Gazitua in a press release Tuesday.
While food historian (and occasional CL contributor) Andy Huse said the Miami-Tampa sandwich war was over during his lecture at the St. Petersburg Museum of History two years ago, Sergio's is reigniting the debate before the fest's food battle.
Using the hashtag, the restaurant reached out to locals like Stone Soup Company, the festival's 2014 champ, and Cigar City Brewing, which is competing in this year's contest. Celebrity chefs Tyler Florence and Bobby Flay were recruited into the discussion, too.
